WHAT IS HYDROGEN SULFIDE?
Hydrogen sulfide is a gas released by anaerobic bacteria found
in nearly
ALL water collection and treatment processes.
In addition to being extremely odorous, hydrogen sulfide is corrosive
and toxic.
|
MARCAB's
mobile unit is ideal for evacuating a manhole before personnel
enter without spreading odors and offending the neighbors,
as well as for immediate response to odor complaints.

WHY REMOVE HYDROGEN SULFIDE?
Hydrogen sulfide, present at wastewater
and water treatment plants, collection facilities and industrial
establishments, can reach concentrations in excess of 100 ppm. It
is important to remove these sulfides because:
- Sulfide emissions represent the primary
source of odor complaints. The odor threshold
of hydrogen sulfide is less than 2 ppm.
- The sulfuric acid formed from hydrogen
sulfide is extremely corrosive and is
destructive to facilities and infrastructure.
- Even slightly elevated concentrations of
hydrogen sulfide are hazardous to personnel.
Exposure to concentrations as low as 5 ppm
can affect the eyes and lungs, increasingly
higher concentrations quickly deaden
the olfactory abilities, compounding the
likelihood of more serious consequences
eventually leading to death.

WHERE CAN MARCAB ODOR CONTROL
SYSTEMS BE USED?
MARCAB has odor control installations from Coast to Coast in a
large variety of applications:
Head Works
Sludge Holding Tanks
SBR's Wet Wells
Pump Stations
Lift Stations
Covered Clarifiers
Siphons
Basically, ANYWHERE foul air can be captured MARCAB

HYDROGEN SULFIDE REMOVAL VS. COMPLETE
ODOR CONTROL
Hydrogen sulfide is the leading cause of odor complaints. In many
cases removing the hydrogen sulfide, removes the offensive odor.
The main component of a MARCAB Odor Control System is the time proven
Iron Sponge technology. Iron Sponge has been used in scrubber systems
to remove hydrogen sulfide for over half a century. Iron Sponge
is a woodchip impregnated with hydrated ferric oxide which reacts
with hydrogen sulfide to form ferric sulfide and water, thus removing
the hydrogen sulfide from the foul-air stream:
Fe2O3 o H2O + 3H2S . Fe2S3 + 4H2O
The ferric sulfide then reacts with the water and oxygen present
in the system to re-form hydrated ferric oxide and elemental sulfur,
thus regenerating the bed continuously:
2Fe2S3 + 3O2 + 2H2O . 2Fe2O3 o H2O + 6S
This process continues until eventually the Iron Sponge is coated
with elemental sulfur and is removed from the system, disposed of
at a standard landfill and replaced with a fresh supply. In some
cases, some odors still remain after the removal of the hydrogen
sulfide. In these cases MARCAB adds a secondary stage to our scrubber
systems consisting of a smaller amount of carbon. With all the hydrogen
sulfide removed, the carbon will only be required to remove any
remaining VOC's, thus greatly increasing the longevity and cost
effectiveness of the carbon.
A MARCAB
Dual Stage Scrubber relieves a neighborhood of Lift Station odors.
